Devil’s Garden is Folkwinds’ second collaboration, a sequel to Sleepy Hollow, with Dr. Rajesh Balkrishnan; and it’s one to behold.
Devil's Garden is a journey; a long trek to a far away base camp, a months-long road trip through an expansive desert, and the familiarity and comfort of finding your way back home.
If you’ve ever smelled Cloud Illusions; Devil’s Garden is an evolution of that original Folkwinds DNA.
Working with Rajesh is a rewarding process in that it challenges my abilities as a perfumer. Rajesh sources materials one would have to travel to the end of the earth to acquire, and then leaves the weaving up to the perfumer, who fits all of the pieces together, and builds the accords that tell the story he (Rajesh) wants to share; in building those accords, the perfuming becomes a collaborative effort.
While I’m normally both the artistic director and nose behind Folkwinds; for Sleepy Hollow, and now for Devil’s Garden, the creative direction has been led by Rajesh, and has led to astoundingly beautiful, mysterious perfumes.
When I compose perfumes on my own, often they become too familiar, so much so that I must take weeks off of working on a composition at a time in order to experience my work objectively.
In these collaborations with Rajesh; the perfumes maintain a veil of mystery to me, and I find myself feeling like a kid witnessing magic tricks; the enigma of how and why the compositions work remind me why I started perfuming in the first place.
